Actually, shady, you always had to tap it to use it. If you look at the artifact cards in Alpha and Beta, you'll see that some are called Mono Artifacts (which the IM is) and some are called Poly Artifacts.
Poly Artifacts do not tap when you use them.
Mono Artifacts DO tap when you use them.

I think you do. Even as you play the card as written, with no errata from newer Oracle wordings, it's still considered a mono artifact, which by the rules of the game (including current) requires you to tap it to activate its ability. "Mono Artifact" might not mean anything to us nowadays, but its still relevant, as it takes the place of the tap symbol on this card (and others like it), and still count as "the way the card is written", errata or no.

If R&D's Secret Lair is in play, you don't have to tap Mono Artifacts to use them.
