If you take the eras they were legal in into consideration, the hordes are better than helldozer, and much more so.
Helldozer did not have dark ritual available, but the hordes did, and thus insured that the opponent would never have more than three lands in play. The hordes also had instill energy, which let it destroy two lands a turn, or destroy one and attack. If that weren't enough, the only removal spell that could kill the hordes was swords to plowshares, but there were many more ways to kill Helldozer by the time Ravnica came around.
Also, the hordes have the flavor, the art and the nostalgia.

Fireball, Disintegrate, Balance, Wrath of God, Chaos Orb, Chaoslace + Blue Elemental Blast, Thoughtlace + Red Elemental Blast, Drain Life, Earthquake, Meekstone, Nevinyrral's Disk, Northern Paladin, Royal A55a55in, or Pestilence would have dealt with the Hordes in the Beta days, as well. Although few of those are as clean or efficient as StP or modern removal.

What I like most about them compared to Helldozer:
Blue or white player (bowp): I steal your Demonic Hordes, hah!
You: ...
bowps upkeep
Demonic Hordes: Give me my black mana.
bowp: What? Oh, I don't have any.
Demonic Hordes: I told you give me my black mana until your next upkeep. WHERE IS MY MANA!
bowp: Calm down man!
Demonic Hordes: No mana? See that land of yours, I wonder what happens if...
bowp: Don't do it!
Demonic Hordes: Whoops, I destroyed it. NOW GIVE ME MY BLACK MANA OR YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT UPKEEP!

The best part of that is YOU get to choose the land destroyed. Works just about as well as playing the card normally.

Always loved coming up with horrible first turns. This was a lynch pin in one. Swamp, Black Lotus, Dark Ritual, Demonic Hordes, Done.
