Hail to Yawgmoth, Father of Machines!

Great card, though it's existence means WotC has to be careful what other cards they create for black since they could be too powerful when cast with this.

Still one of the greatest of all time. I swear voting this 5/5 made its rating go down.

I believe that this is the only card to be printed with the "mana source" type. Getting magic from spells was always iffy in the old rules, and it wasn't until this point that they decided to make a special spell type for doing so. Shortly after Urza's Saga, Sixth edition would come out which would clear up such issues and do away with the "mana source" card type.

This is currently the highest-rated card in the most overpowered block ever printed, beating out Yawgmoth's Will, Tolarian Academy, Gaea's Cradle...

That this version was printed with the bizarre card type "mana source" caused no end to confusion among my early play group as we were starting out in Magic. We thought that it stayed in play and could be tapped for 3 black mana every turn, which made for some ridiculous plays.

I like this card but I hate the fact that every time someone decides to put a turn one game-winning combo on these pages the assume that you have in your opening hand of seven cards four of these, four Black Lotus and the cards that you need to actually win the game.

Grrr.

I want this back, especially with some cool new art.

But I disagree with your comment about the color pie, it's always been there. It might be more apparent now since cards are becoming more and more complicated. But the color pie is what makes the game fun. I wanna build some crazy counter heavy deck? Well then I'm gonna either have a blue deck, or a crazy combo with the other colors. Putting counters in green casually would make a monster.

Same with any color specific ability, I don't even think this goes against blacks theme all that much. Short temporary mana advantage. It's not like Overgrowth or anything. It's practically just card disadvantage unless you have just the right cards. And in the later game, unless you're casting a Consume Spirit it's almost worthless.

Read has Bolt back.

I don't see any reason not to reprint this - except for modern WotC's pride. It would mean admitting that the game was just-plain-better back then and that all their "color pie" nonsense has become a weight around MtG's neck.
