Actually, I'm pretty sure it was Tropical Island that inspired Birds of Paradise, not this one (Volcanic Island.)

Anyway, a great card since it is dual land that produces blue mana.

Left out of Alpha by mistake, along with CoP: Black. Oops!

Limited Edition Beta has SEVEN cards more than Limited Edition Alpha. Circle of Protection: Black and Volcanic Island were left out by mistake, while the five basic lands were printed in two different versions in Alpha and three different version in Beta.

The card whose original art begat Birds of Paradise.

There were three cards left out of Alpha. This is the one most people remember. And with good reason. It's the best of the three.

Question for WOTC...Why was this left out of Alpha Edition? Was red/blue considered too powerful or was it a mistake?
