The hippie and abyssal specter were part of my friends deck, and we all hated it. he had the requisite dark rituals and hymns, and it was absolutely brutal. That deck got forcibly retired because no one wanted to play it.

I agree with Gasimakos, solid 5 here. Dark Ritual + Hypo = game over more often than not. But even on turn 3, this guy is devastating.
Can't do much better for card advantage via discard in black than this, hymn to tourach, and mind twist

Not to mention, he's efficiently costed just for the black flying body. They still print french vanilla flying 2/1s for 3 mana in black.

Brutal when cast early, and solid even when cast on turn 3.
It is interesting to note how much the removal of Dark Ritual has changed the game. Hypnotic Specter was reprinted in 10th Edition and 2010, and I don't think saw that much play. Vampire NIghthawk is, arguably, on par with this cheap flier, and it wasn't considered broken. Dark Ritual was the engine that made all this silliness possible and what really kicked this card over the top.

nothing huge? whaaaat the faaaaack? this dudes a solid 5. have you ever played against someone using him? back in the day this dude was the bane of ever magic players existence. he's god damn brutal, man. unless you got out some kind of... ornithopter or something on the first turn, or had some fast creature removal, you were about to lose 3-4 cards and a chunk of life. great *** card.

I like this card, it's a 2/2 flyer that isn't half bad, but it will also make your opponent discard cards. Nothing huge, but it's solid. 3.5/5

So, story time.
My brother gave me all his old Magic cards for Christmas - except for the Unglued/Unhinged - and since then I've slowly been learning the history and price of them.
Well, I about shat a brick just now finding out that his Alpha Specters (yes, I said Specters - only 2 though), which are in nearly perfect condition, would sell for a low of about $60 a piece. Holy absolute balls, Batman. Aaand FNM is in about 16 hours, so I can't wait to tell the guys at the card shop all about this. The only question now... do I hold onto it or try to sell it/get some store credit?
This is the most wonderful dilemma to have. Greatest Christmas present ever.
5/5 for being an early staple card and just because I'm damn near euphoric right now. I feel like... a little kid at Christmas. *glasses*
(joke would've been better closer to Christmas, I know...)
