The Birds have been one of the staples of the game since it began, but they were created as an afterthought. Their art was originally supposed to be for Tropical Island, but the bird was too prominent. So Richard Garfield created a card just for the art, and it ended up being the most versatile mana-producing creature ever.
--Also the creature type was 'Mana Birds', modern versions are just 'Bird'
--I have never traded away a Bird of Paradise in my 14 years of playing magic. I like to let suitors drool over the prospect of trading but I can never part with them in the end.

I played this young guy with my old-school Red/Green white-bordered deck, which I’ve kept for years, a couple days ago. My game went like this:
T1: Taiga, cast birds of paradise.
T2: Mountain, cast Nature's Lore, search and drop another Taiga, and cast two birds of paradise
T3: Tap all three birds of paradise and three lands, to cast a Shivan Dragon
T4: Attack with my Shivan Dragon, pump her up to 10/5, cast berserk, to make her 20/5… GG
Turn 4 win white-border retro style.
